The History

Prior to 1865, the track of land now known as Ocean City in Maryland was patented as "Ladies Resort by the Sea."  Tourism began when in 1869 Isaac Coffin built the first beach cottage that charged a fee for guests.

Ocean City is actually a barrier island, bordered on the East by the Atlantic Ocean (Worcester County is the only County in Maryland that borders the Atlantic) and on the West by the bay which was created when the great hurricane in 1933 carved out an inlet. 

Ocean City gradually grew and developed as modes of transportation developed in America.  From its beginnings when visitors came by stagecoach and ferry, and later by railroad - all the way to the 21st century where visitors come largely by automobile, many crossing the Chesapeake Bay Bridge connecting the Eastern and Western Shores of the Bay at Annapolis.

Families for over a century have ventured to Ocean City for rest and relaxation on ten miles of clean, sandy Atlantic beaches.

Almost everyone in Maryland and many in the surrounding states have Ocean City childhood memories of the Boardwalk, the Ferris Wheel, Thrasher's French Fries, body-surfing in the Atlantic Ocean, and building sand castles.

Today, Ocean City continues to burn family vacation memories in the minds of children and adults alike, but those memories will now include winter-time get-a-ways,  excellent food, golf, shopping, fine accommodations and day trips to many interesting sites in the surrounding areas.
